How do I replace batteries in the offline reader?
The advantage of an offline reader is complete isolation from
virusses and spyware in your everyday PC. The disadvantage is that
you will have to replace batteries every now and then.
The batteries in the offline reader are expected to last at least a year,
if the reader is used a few times a day and if the card is removed quickly
after reading its outcome. Do not leave a card inserted in the reader.
Replacing the batteries is a simple task. You need a fine screwdriver with
a crossed head and two new "coin" batteries. The batteries must be
20mm in diameter, generating 3V each. The Lithium battery CR2016 that is
currently in the readers that OpenFortress ships cost about $10 for a pack
of ten. OpenFortress does not sell batteries.
First, you turn the reader upside down and you open the single screw with the
screw driver. Then you can shift the backside panel to the left, or to the
side of the screw.
You can now see the batteries. Please note the way they are lying in the
photo, this is the only right way. The left battery has its + side facing up,
the right one has it facing down. Replace both batteries at the same time.
Please discard old batteries in an environment-conscious manner.
The panel slides back on as it came off. There is no force involved; the
batteries should be pressed down in their slots to allow gentle shifting on
of the panel. This may take some practice.
Note: You should withstand any temptation to open more screws.
Chances are that you will not be able to properly put the device back
together if you open more.
